How to Create an Image Where the Flash Fires Multiple Times During a Single Exposure

Creating a photo with multiple flash bursts during a single exposure can produce stunning effects, such as capturing the motion of a subject in distinct steps. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Recently, we’ve received a few questions about what stroboscope mode is and how it works in certain TTL products.
I’d like to create a brief description about this topic to explain what these settings mean and how they can be configured in the setup program.
In one sentence, it’s about generating multiple flash bursts during a long-exposure shot.

First of all, these functions are currently available in the i-TURTLE SMART TTL, i-TURTLE 2 SMART TTL (Nikon), as well as the s-TURTLE SMART TTL and s-TURTLE 2 SMART TTL (Sony) trigger versions.

This setting works with shutter speeds between 1/10 and 2 seconds and only in manual mode.
For Sony systems, this feature can be enabled by turning on the "WL" (Wireless Flash Mode).
For Nikon systems, the external flash must be set to manual mode in the camera menu.

The following example demonstrates the setup process step by step using Sony software:

  1. In the Setup Software, go to menu item 6, where you’ll find three options:

Choose option 3 to activate stroboscope mode.

Trigger the flash on the front curtain in "WL" mode.   (In this case, when the WL is turned on, the system triggers the flashes for the first curtain!)
Trigger the flash on the rear curtain in "WL" mode.    (In this case, when the WL is turned on, the system triggers the flashes for the rear curtain!)
    Activate Stroboscope (multistrobe) mode.

  2. In menu item 7, you can adjust the signal strength of the trigger's LED (brightness adjustment).

Set it to 1/16, or if using a weaker optical cable, select FULL

    .
  3. In menu item 8, you can configure how many times the flash will fire during the shutter’s exposure time.

For example, if the camera's shutter speed is set to 1 second, and you configure 4 flashes, the flash will fire 4 times with a 250ms interval while the shutter is open. This creates the image on the sensor.

Tips for Best Results

Dark background: A darker environment emphasizes the subject’s movement.
Steady motion: Ensure the subject’s motion is smooth for clear separation between flash bursts.
Experiment with timing: Adjust the shutter speed and flash count to create different effects.
